About WAPIMS

Western Australian Petroleum and Geothermal Information Management System (WAPIMS) is a petroleum exploration database containing data on titles, wells, geophysical surveys and other related exploration and production data. The system also contains the Core Library (Perth and Kalgoorlie) database.

Overview

WAPIMS is a database of public information generated from activities conducted under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967 (PGERA67) and the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1982 (PSLA82). These activities include well drilling and completion, geophysical survey acquisition and reprocessing, as well as other activities related to the exploration, appraisal and development of petroleum, geothermal, natural hydrogen and helium resources, and underground storage of CO2. WAPIMS also hosts information about samples held in the Perth and Kalgoorlie Core Libraries.

Public release of information

Detailed information regarding the release of State petroleum data can be found in Part 9 of the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources (Resource Management and Administration) regulations 2015.

  • Open information (also known as 'always open' information) including the name, location, type or purpose, and other general information about a well or survey may be made public by DMPE at any time.

  • Well data and reports may be released two years after the end of the activity. Where permits expire through surrender, cancellation, revocation or termination the data becomes releasable on the day of expiry.

  • The release of survey reports and data vary according to survey type, permit type, and commercial intent (exclusivity). While survey reports and data containing basic information may be released three years from the end of the activity, confidentiality periods of up to 15 years may apply.

State and Commonwealth jurisdictions

WAPIMS holds public information generated from energy resource exploration and production activities conducted within Western Australia’s onshore and state water boundaries, as well as WA Commonwealth offshore activities released before 1 January 2012.

For information on energy resource exploration conducted within Australian Commonwealth waters, visit the National Offshore Petroleum Information Management System website, or contact Geoscience Australia at ausgeodata@ga.gov.au or the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA).

Accessing core and cuttings

All WA state and Commonwealth NOPDCR petroleum core and cuttings are managed by the Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) and stored in the Perth Core Library. For more information about accessing GSWA core library services and samples visit Core library services and samples.

You can view WA State petroleum well sample availability using the Core Library tab and request access using the request form. To access reports of previous studies completed on the cores, use the Search bar.

For Commonwealth well sample materials stored at the Perth Core Library under NOPDCR agreement, please use NOPIMS to view availability of material and request access.

You will also need to book a suitable date and time to view the requested samples by emailing corelibrary.requests@dmpe.wa.gov.au. Once your request has been approved, the sample(s) will be made available on your booking date at the relevant Core Library.

Conditions for sampling

  1. Permission will be given only after GSWA staff has examined current Perth Core Library holdings, and after the applicant supplies a comprehensive list of material to be removed for analysis.

  2. Approval is subject to the volume of material available, and a review of results obtained from previous destructive analyses.

  3. When sampling core for destructive analysis, the minimum sample quantity required to complete the analysis should be taken. It is expected that the sample will be consumed in analysis. However, if the core is not destroyed, contaminated, or consumed, it must be returned to the Perth Core Library within six months of the sampling date. Core sampling is limited to a one-quarter (¼) core section by volume, and a representative one-quarter (¼) core section must be retained by the Perth Core Library for archiving purposes.

  4. When sampling cuttings for destructive analysis, the minimum sample quantity required to complete the analysis should be taken. It is expected that the sample will be consumed in analysis. However, if the cuttings are not destroyed, contaminated, or consumed, they must be returned to the Perth Core Library within six months of the sampling date. Samples from cuttings are limited to 10g per interval, and a representative 50g sample must be retained by the Perth Core Library for archiving purposes. Samples from cuttings must be representative of the total sample (i.e. selective sampling of a particular lithology is not permitted).

  5. A detailed inventory of all samples and volumes taken from each well and the purpose for which they were taken must be supplied to the Perth Core Library at the completion of sampling.

  6. A copy of the analysis report and data, including methods of analyses and interpretations, must be submitted within six months of the sampling date. The report and data must be submitted to:

    For WA State wells:

    Geoscience Information Officer
    Energy Exploration Information

    Geoscience Information Officer
    Energy Exploration Information
Geological Survey and Resource Strategy Division
Department of Mines, Petroleum and Exploration
    1st Floor, 100 Plain Street
